食欲の秋
秋である。「天高く、馬肥ゆる秋」である。しかし、この馬とは貴男・貴女のことではない。そもそも、この語句は秋・好天気・健康を願ったり、喜んだりするものではない。昔中国の唐の時代（AD700年前後）に、当時国境の北から常に侵略して来た騎馬民族・匈奴の襲来を警告する言葉なのである。まあそれでも、現在の日本では秋の到来を喜ぶ表現だし、お互いに、肥満には気を付けましょう。
子供達が大好きであり、大人でもグルメとは距離のある普通の人達が大好きなのは、トマトケチャップである。まあまあ以上のレストランのテーブルには決して乗ってなく、家庭の卓上には鎮座している。ふと、気になってしらべてみると、ケチャップの語源は、台湾・中国南部の魚汁・魚醤、コエ・チャプで、野菜汁・茸汁・魚醤・・多種がある。ケチャップがトマトケチャップのことを指すのは、日本と米国だけで、ヨーロッパとアジア諸国では、ケチャップには、茸あるいはバナナさらに本来の魚介類を主原料としたものがある。米国では、ケチャップ（トマトケチャップ）を野菜の料理としたらどうかと政府機関から提案されたこともあったらしい。
トマトケチャップと共に人気のあるマヨネーズは、フランス語だがスペイン原産だ。スペインの地中海側、フランスよりの沖に観光休暇地として人気の二つの島がある。マジョルカ島とミノルカ島だ。日本語直訳すれば、大島・小島だ。マヨネーズは、ミノルカ島原産。しかし、どういう訳だか、ミノルカソースではなくて、マジョルカ風というフランス語となった。

Appetite and autumn
Autumn has come. In Japan, we have a common saying “Sky is high and horses are fat”. However, these horses do not mean you. Originally, the phrase means neither fine weather nor good health. The phrase was to warn the invasions of the Huns from the north front border in the Tang period (around AD 700). The cavalry of the Huns was famous. Anyhow, in Japan, the phrase expresses we are glad to be in autumn. We should be careful not getting fat.
Our children in Japan like very much the tomato ketchup. Not only the children but also many grown-ups who are not gourmet like the tomato ketchup. A tomato ketchup bottle would never be on the table of restaurants. However, it is a regular member on the table of homes. I tried a simple research about the tomato ketchup. The word “ketchup” was from Formosa and southern coast area of China main land, meaning fish essence, like in Viet Nam, Nuoc Mam. There are many variations, vegetable based, mushroom based and fish based. Only in Japan and USA, ketchup means tomato ketchup. In USA, once a bureau suggested to place tomato ketchup in the category of vegetables.
A popular sauce among Japanese kids, as popular as tomato ketchup, is the mayonnaise sauce. There are two islands, popular resorts in the Mediterranean, southern coast of Spain, Majorca and Menorca, meaning the large one and the small one. Mayonnaise is from Menorca in Spain but somehow the name is in French, telling it is from Majorca.
