"Respect for the Aged Day" $B!!(B(A Japanese national holiday)
August is the month of the summer vacation. This summer, every day it was
over 30 degrees Celsius. Even in September, it has kept over 30 degrees
in Tokyo. It seems not only the heat but also holidays continued to September.
There were two national holidays. For the people who work 5 days a week,
they could enjoy twice 3 day-long holidays.
One of the holidays in September is named $B!H(BRespect for the Aged Day$B!I(B.
I would like to find out who got this irritatingly ridiculous idea. To
respect is a quite complicated and highly advanced psychology and act.
Probably we human beings have established this manner through our long
history of development and decadence. It must be the product of undemocratic
social structure. $B!H(BTo respect$B!I(B, $B!H(BShould be respected$B!I(B, $B!H(BMust be respected$B!I(B;
we meet these narrations often in the circumstances where the side of the
power and authority try to force us to obey them. In the nature, there
are the sense and act of $B!H(Blove$B!I(B and $B!H(Bfear$B!I(B but not $B!H(Brespect$B!I(B. $B!H(BTo
respect$B!I(B is an artificial act to express one$B!G(Bs fear. Naturally there
is nothing to do with to love.
If the aged should be respected, it must be because the aged are the group
of people who are closest to the greatest fear that is death. They are
neither respected for their long experience of life nor for the amount
of their knowledge.
To eat for getting rid of hunger and to love for reproducing next generation,
these are the basic strong desires. The youth would be driven by these
desires; therefore they used to work hard. It is said so many young people
lost these desires today. Japan lost the war in 1945. Many men wasted their
life. To recover the lost of life, many babies were born immediately after
the war. Now, this population group is retiring. In many sectors, the skills
and knowledge kept by this generation are going to disappear without followers.
We should try to utilize the value of the aged instead of having $B!H(BThe
Respect-for the-Aged Day$B!I(B. Make a new system of employment without age
limit, totally equal chances to the aged and to the youth. Anyhow the famous
Japanese life time employment does not exist anymore.
We, young or old, should not respect each other. We should love each other.
