So many people spend summer holidays abroad. Some people have been abroad several
times. " Oh it was so nice in Paris." Paris can be Rome, Prague, Brussels or Stockholm.
Why do we feel so nice and cozy when we stay in those cities?
Because those cities are lively, the streets are full of dwellers. The shops, stores and
offices are on the ground floor and upstairs. The 2nd, 3rd and up to the attic floor, usually
not higher than the 7th floor, are for residents. Even in the central part of the cities, the
streets are filled with dwellers. That is why groceries, vegetable stores, bakeries and
shoe stores are lined up on the streets. You can find even kinder gardens and schools.
You can smell the life in Paris from George Simenon's Maigret series. Ed Mac Bain's
Isola is just New York itself. Even in Japanese books, Zenigata Heiji runs through the
city of Edo as Kodo Nomura wrote. Here you sense the urban life.
Citizen of the megalopolises lead a false urban life. To spend 2 hours or 3 hours in the
traffic system everyday for going to the schools and offices is nothing but wasting your
life, both the time of your life and your physical life. Our world today is driven by a
category of the industries, which go after the economical profits by forcing us to waste
the natural resources; the resources can be our own life. Their industrial activities are
called developments, redevelopments or better utilization of land. These wild activities
seem to be finally calmed down in Europe and US, but seem to run up to the hell in East
Asia and south East Asia.
The two great inventions, "Elevator" and "WC" have made us possible to pile up spaces.
The gigantic basic industries such as the financial institutes, the developers and
general contractors make the situation worse since they believe that the high-rise super
skyscrapers make big and easy money. Those huge buildings in the city centers are not
the symbol of the great city with real comfortable urban life. They are huge complexes of
the factories, the kombinat of the third industries. The skyscraper flats that can't
function for common daily life are the objects for vanity and speculations. Do you have a
hardware store, a vegetable store, a meat shop, a bakery, a haberdashery and a shoe
store in your neighborhood?
