すがた
早いもので、桃の節句・お雛様もとっくに過ぎてしまいました。 蔵の中の雛人形は、取り出され、飾り付けられて初めてすがたを現します。 そして蔵の奥深くヘ収められると、すがたを消します。
私達は、外界を認識するのに視覚を一番あてにするようです。 折角の、聴覚・嗅覚・触覚の能力は、いつの間にか回りの動物達の能力に比べはるかに劣るものとなりました。　 この視覚ですら、動物・鳥よりはそうとう劣る場合が多いようです。 しかし古い友人の後ろ姿は、チラット見ただけで気が付くし、同じブランド・デザインのバッグを持った人が居ることは瞬時に気が付きます。 そしてその同じ人は鰯と鰊の区別がつかないということも、ままありますね。
見える事と、記憶との照合が組み合わさって初めて、認識することになるようです。  知覚することと、認識することは別物とわかります。
クロッカス・プリムラ・ペチュニア・さくら・こぶし　春と共に街は花々に満ちてきました。 考えてみると、醜い花というものは思いつきません。  仔犬・子羊・子アザラシ・子象。　動物達の赤ん坊は、鰐・蛇でもかわいいものです。 それが、ごきぶり・蜘蛛となるとどうして悲鳴をあげることになるのでしょうか。  かぶとむしは、ＯＫ。ごきぶりは、ＮＯ。   なぜでしょう。
照合の対象としての記憶は環境に左右され標準化されています。 ものまねが知育発達成長の基本である我々は、生育の環境から逃れられません。 標準は、繰り返し適用され、固定化されやすいものです。
一定地域の記憶の標準を文化ということもできそうです。  異文化を理解するには、花を見て美しいと感じる心を大切に、固定した基準を捨てねばなりません。努力が必要です。
自己の文化をそのまま当てはめると、「おすし」は、「米の団子と生魚を手づかみで喰う料理」となります。
鯨は、旨そうか、可愛いか。 仔犬は、旨そうか、可愛いか。   こんな問題は、無数にあります。
自然界にまで考えを広げてみると、もっと厳しいことになるようです。
多くの植物にとって、花は増殖の最も重要な手段です。   彼らは、我々人類が地球上に現れる以前、はるか昔から、昆虫と付き合い、助け合ってきました。  花の色・かたちが我々にどう見えるかは、植物にとっては、本当にどうでも良いこと、無意味・無価値なのです。
昆虫は、スペクトルム（一口で言えば虹の七色）のとらえ方が我々と異なりその上複眼です。   この昆虫を引き付けることこそ花の意味があり価値があるのです。    ことによると、匂いが最も大切なのかも知れません。私達にとっての花々のすがた、美しさ、それは全く一方的な思い込みです。
どうやら、世の中には無数の全く異なった文化があることを認めるほかは、なさそうです。
我々が国粋とか固有とか、後生大事にしている文化には、どうも、より共通な、より根源的な幾つかと、多数の亜文化・擬似文化があると考えたほうが納得しやすいと思います。　
排他的な神々、ダイヤモンドの輝き、スーパーカーの快感、スポーツの名を借りたマスヒステリー。貴方は踊らされては居ませんか。

Appearance

The 3^rd of March is the girls’ day called “Hinamatsuri”: “Dolls festival”. Many Japanese families decorate their homes by setting a stand with nice small dolls. For the boys, the 5^th of May is their festival. By the way, the 5^th of May is a national holiday but not the 3^rd of March. The stored dolls have forms but they are invisible. Only when they are displayed they have the appearances. When they are put back to the store they disappear.

We mostly rely on our visual capabilities to perceive our surroundings. We are very much inferior to the other animals when it concerns to the auditory sense, the sense of smell and the tactile sensations. Perhaps we are declining. Even these visual capabilities that we rely on are not so good as those of many animals or birds.  But you notice your old friend only just taking a glimpse of her silhouette. And it doesn’t take a second to realize her bag is a same brand and same design of yours.　At the same time you might not differentiate sardines and herrings.

It seems our perception is a result of a combination between sight and association, an association selected out of our memories. Only seeing does not mean to perceive.

Crocuses, primroses, petunias, cherry blossoms and magnolias: Our town is filled with flowers. Flowers are beautiful, nearly always beautiful. It is rather difficult to pick some flower as ugly. Puppies, lambs, baby seals and baby elephants are sweet. Even alligators and snakes are sweet when they are babies. But many of us scream meeting cockroaches and spiders. Beetles (not the Beetles) are OK but not cockroaches. Why? 

We collect memories to be associated. These memories are the results of our circumstances and are standardized so that we could communicate to each other. We grow up and develop through the process of imitating parents and others. Therefore we can’t be free from the circumstances where we grow. The standardized memories as criteria are repeatedly applied and have strong tendency to be solid but fixed. We may call these criteria the culture.
For understanding another culture, you must be free and open just like to feel the beauties of the flowers. If you apply your fixed criteria, “Sushi” is a dish of rice balls and raw fish often alive eaten directly with bare hand. Are whales delicious or cute? Are puppies delicious or cute?

Nature tells us another version.

For many plants the flower is the key to their propagation. The deep and intimate relationship between plants and insects has been kept incomparably longer than the existence of we humans. For the plants, the appearances to us humans have no value or no meaning. For the insects, the solar spectrums have totally different effect than for our sights. And they have compound eyes. And in their brain, the information must be composed totally differently than we do.
The plants must attract the insects via flowers. It might be the scents of flowers playing the leading role. What we appreciate, adore about the flowers are actually our very one-sided egoistic belief.

It seems we ought to accept there are quite a number of different cultures.

We often believe our tradition or culture is supreme and absolute. But if we could have such an insight that there are some basic and common criteria and there are many mocks and fakes, then we can understand our world with fair reasons.
