Galleria
Galleria in Milan is a beautiful building
for shopping. There are many multistory shopping
malls named "Galleria" after Milan's.
The building should be multistoried when
named galleria. "Mall" must be
from Pall Mall Street in London. The name
Pall Mall came from old Italian word for
golf. Pall means ball, Mall mallet. Once
upon a time Pall Mall was a golf course.
Those Gallerias in the world including Milan's
are not especially successful in business.
We human beings prefer to walk on the surface
of the ground making a line. We are not so
good in 3 dimensional world. We can't fly.
We are not so good to cover a surface. We
cut a surface to ribbons and put together
in a line then we walk on it. Among the creatures
we human beings and some of the mammals are
in the minority group who cannot utilize
and enjoy the 3 dimensional world. Whales,
dolphins and seals those who have returned
back to the ocean have regained such a fantastic
space and freedom. Why our ancestors left
the great space of ocean? When they learned
to eat the photosynthetic product of the
botanical world, perhaps an easier way of
life, they made their farewell to the ocean.
This is just my own assumption. Do you know
an academic explanation? I would like to
know. In our modern way of life, thanks to
the elevators and WC (water closet) systems,
we can live in a top floor of the high tower.
I think it dangerous. Very dangerous. Public
buildings totally relying on the elevator
and the escalator system are something impossible
craziness for me. A child can both visibly
and audibly recognize one's mother from a
distance of 20 meters maximum. A height of
20 meters is also the limit for daily life
to walk. Tell children to play out in the
yard 8 stories down, away from the visible
contact to their mothers. Let them take risks
making wet their pants. I understand they
will stay home and play computer games. Even
for us hurrying up from the subway station
to our apartment where the elevator system
is out of function. It is a catastrophe.
We are clumsy weak creature to move vertically.
We must realize how difficult it is to build
up a multiple storied society. I don't want
risk my pants and dignity.
