| 国の名前 世界の諸国の国名は、実に不規則であり、例外続出、自在解釈、楽しめる。 国内版と国際版が全く異なる国がある。フィンランド・スオミ、ギリシャ・ヘラス、スイス・ヘルベチア。 その国の切手を見れば、当事者・国民・庶民の日常的な自国の呼び方が判りそうなものだが、イギリスの切手には、何と国名が無い。 国名は云うまでもなく自国を他国と区別する名前であるが、この名前に少し機能を持たせたくなるのが人情で、多くの国は、政治機構・統治システムを国名に取り入れている。かって、我国は、大日本帝国であった。 英国は普通、ＵＫである。これは、「The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland」の略語である。Great Britainとは、イングランドとウエールズとスコットランドが乗っている島のことだ。 Republic か、あるいはKingdomもしくはEmpireか。統治システムを簡単に、二つに分けるのは大間違いである。実にバリエーションが多い。 レパブリックは、本来選挙によって統治者を定めるという意味だが、レパブリックを名乗る、世襲専制国は多い。統治期間も、短期交替・長期・無期限・世襲と、あらゆるバーションがある。その継承方式にも、無血、殺戮・暗殺・死後交替・投票・禅譲と、喜劇・悲劇・残酷劇がある。 日本・スペイン・オランダ・スエーデン・ギリシャなどの諸国は、統治形態に触れていない。何となくわざと曖昧にしているような感じだ。 ところで、日本は、日の出る国、極東の国と宣言している。しかし、ハワイ・ＵＳＡから眺めれば、西方、日の沈む国、日没国である。 The names of nations The names of nations are very irregular. Once upon a time, we called Japan as “Empire of Japan”. UK is from “the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland”.
