Japanese family names are often composed with two Chinese characters. The meanings of these characters are the things close to our daily life: trees, flowers, rice cultivations, mountains, villages, large or small, upper or lower and the orientations (North, East, South and West). Somehow I feel they are artificially made being forced by the needs of society. We are known fish eaters. But by some unknown reason there are very few names of fish except lobster and shell. Scandinavian family names partly resemble the Japanese family names with trees, forest, branch, mountains, river and the orientations (North, East, South and West). And also they have the unique system of the paternal line such as Andersen and Pettersson as the paternal line system in England, Scotland and Ireland. In the world there are many different cultural patterns with unique historical back ground. How are the names of such countries such as India, Turkey, Egypt and Persian nations? When the space of one’s life is small there is no need of name. In a family, “Dear” and “Darling” are sufficient. But when our community expands, unfortunately it is inevitable; we must be coded for being identified and to be equally and fairly taxed. And in some nations it is necessary to be called for compulsory military service. The reformation from the local autonomy to the centrally governed nation is one of the most important subjects to research in our modern history. The research on the historical roll of family names could be very interesting. Japanese Emperor has no family name. Queen Elisabeth has no family name. |
