台湾旅行
台湾は、Formosa とも称ばれる。 ポルトガル語で「美しき・麗しの島」の意と説明されている。　この呼び名は、現在でもヨーロッパでは日常用語として活きている。　種子島への鉄砲伝来が１５４３年だから、台湾という名前よりも、今日まではるかに長い間、使用されている通称、ということになる。　　
私は、この「美しき・麗しの島」という説明に違和感を感じてきた。　ポルトガルから台湾までの長い航海では、アフリカ大陸・インド半島・シャム・アンナン・ジャワ・・・と、無数の海岸線・景色・港を経てきたわけだ。　危険な航海の後の景色は常に美しく見えるはずだ。　それに、マストの上、見張りの水夫が大声で叫んだ言葉として、「美しき・麗しの島」は、似つかわしくない。　現代語の、「formosa」の意味・用法を調べると、これは、単なる「美しい」とは異なる。　豊かな、曲線美のことだ。　つまり、オードリー　ヘップバーンは、「formosa 」 とは言えない。　マリリン　モンロー なら、OKということだ。　私の空想では、水夫は、「スゲエ、彼女みたい」と叫んだのである。
台湾は長さ400km、幅150km、面積は九州くらいの島である。この島に、海抜３０００m以上の山が１６５ある。山頂（ピーク）で数えると、２７５もある。　遥かな水平線上に姿を現した、３０００ｍ級の山々、これなら、それまで見てきた大陸、島々とはわけが違う、豊満な寝姿に見えた・・・。
台湾には、風光明媚な観光地、歴史に富んだ建造物、美術館が数多い。しかし、世界遺産に登録されているものはない。　国連に籍が無いからだ。　
世界には、固有の文化・言語・地域を持ちながら独立国家として認められていない事例が意外に多い。　それらが、絶え間ない、紛争・国内紛争・国際紛争を引き起こしている。
「ウクライナ・クリミア」、「北アイルランド」、「クルド」、「バスク」、「西蔵」。
政治・経済というけれども、現実の世界は、経済が政治を形作り、動かしている。　経済社会には国境はない。　世界企業でなければ巨大一流企業ではない。　物流の速度が上がり、情報網の密度・伝達量・速度が高まり、地域間の経済変動にはタイムラグが存在しない。　世界の歴史は、物・心、両面で、非常な速度で変わりつつある。　取り残されているのは、国家・国境の概念であり、そこで活動していると誤解している老いたる政治家・官僚・軍人達ということだ。

Taiwan (Formosa)
Formosa is Taiwan in daily language even today in Europe. Portuguese reached Japan in the 1540s. So I guess at least in the end of 1500s the island was known and called “Formosa” in Europe. Therefore the word Formosa for Taiwan must have been used much longer than the word “Taiwan” for the island.
According to Japanese books; Formosa means beautiful in Portuguese. I have had always a feeling of wrongness that a Portuguese sailor shouted “Beautiful Island” from the top of the mast. From Portugal to Taiwan was a long journey. The sailing boat passed the continent of Africa, Indian Peninsula, Thailand, Cambodia and Java; innumerous coasts, scenery and ports.
After a long dangerous journey, the scenery of lands must always be beautiful. Besides, “Beautiful Island” couldn’t be a sailor’s words. “Formosa” in today’s Portuguese and other Latin languages means rich curvy and beautiful. Audrey Hepburn couldn’t be “Formosa” but Marilyn Monroe was. I imagine that the sailor shouted “That’s my girl!”.
Taiwan is in length 400km, in width 150km and its area is 36,000km2. There are 165 mountains, 275 peaks higher than 3,000m. A silhouette appearing from the horizon with many 3,000 meter mountains; this was fresh new scenery reminding “Voluptuous woman”.
In Taiwan, there are many picturesque places, many beautiful buildings with rich history and many museums. But none of them is registered as world heritage by UNESCO. Because Taiwan is not a member of UN. Today, in our world, there are so many groups of people having their own culture, language and defined living area but not admitted as independent nations. These people in these areas are dissatisfied that lead to domestic and international conflicts, often brutal bloody ones. “Ukraine”, “North Ireland”, “The Kurds”, “Basque” and “Tibet”, we know many examples.
Our world is structured after politics and economics. But in reality politics dance after the directions of economics. The world of economics has no national border. The big enterprise must be multinational, global. The distribution is very fast crossing national borders. The density of information network is high. The huge amount of information can reach to the all corners of the world instantly. The economic fluctuations are without time lag over the world. The history of our world is developing fast. Those who are left behind the times are the concept of “Nation and Border” and also old politicians, bureaucrats and army generals.
