歳末
蛸の足は８本で、英語で蛸はOCTOPUS。PUSは、足。　でも、オクトーバーは、８月ではなくて１０月。　シーザーとアウグストスが強引に暦に押し込んだから・・・誰でも知っている有名な話ですね。　しかし、西欧人は、OCTOBERと聞いても、話しても、蛸を連想しない。　どうして、８の月が１０月なのかとは、考えもしない。（これは、私が調べたことです。）　私は１２月になると、１２月８日、真珠湾攻撃・太平洋戦争を連想します。　西欧人は、クリスマスでしょう。　勿論、誰も、１２番目の月を１０の月と呼ぶのかなどと考えもしない。　
スエーデンでは、夏が明るくて日が沈まない白夜が続くのが裏返しになって、冬至の頃は、やたらと日が短くて、すぐに真っ暗になります。　そこで、盲人に視力を回復させた聖人「サンタ ルチア」のお祭りを１００年ほど前からするようになりました。　光の女神・ルチア・金髪の少女と星の王子達の行列が、家から家へと回ります。　歌を唄いながらの行進です。　玄関先で唄ってもらった家では、お菓子の包みを子供達に配ります。　チョット、米国のハロウインを上品にした感じ。　案外、ハロウイン風習の本家なのかも。　あるいは、その逆かも。　歌は、クリスマスキャロルのスエーデン版なのですが、そのひとつに、いつの間にか、ナポリ民謡・「サンタルチア」が定番となりました。　ただし、メロディーとタイトルだけの借用で、歌詞も唄い方も、ナポリ民謡とは、似ても似つかぬ、スエーデンの「サンタルチア」です。　
メロディーが大ヒットしても、歌詞や雰囲気が全然ちがうという現象は、非常によくありますね。　坂本九の「上を向いて歩こう」の米国バーションの場合は有名です。
西欧では、年末には、ヘンデルやバッハの教会音楽を良く聞きます。　日本では、なんと言っても、第九でしょう。　皆目ドイツ語の出来ない日本中の無数の合唱団が、カタカナ独逸語で第九・合唱に陶酔する・・・。 　私は、これは素晴らしいこと、人類文化の本質に触れていると思います。　メロディーは、言葉の原点です。　言葉・文字・言語・文学・哲学・イデオロジー、全ての源はメロディーです。　同じメロディーに陶酔できることは、世界の文化に共通点がある、ということなのですから。
A year-end scene
The octopus has 8 legs (arms?); octo...8, pus…leg. But October is the 10th month not 8th month. Because Cesar and Augustus forcibly put their names in the Gregorian calendar therefore numbering of the months is as today, 2 months’ mismatch. This episode is well-known. No Europeans associate October with octopus and they never come to a thought that why the 10th month is called as the 8th. I associate December with the Pearl Harbor and WII war. Most of Europeans associate December with Christmas. And according to my simple investigation, nobody wonders why the 12th month is called the 10th.
In Sweden summer days are long, night time is very short. Consequently winter days are very short and black nights are very long. They celebrate Lucia procession. St, Lucia did wonder to recover the sight of blind people. The chain of the associations might have gone; Darkness - Light - St. Lucia. The procession goes singing Christmas carols. Families being visited by the procession give the children candies. There is some similarity to US Halloween but less scaring. Among the carols there is a standard number; Santa Lucia. Santa Lucia is a Naples famous folk song. But the Swedish version took only its melody. Both of the lyrics and the mood are completely different from the original Neapolitan Santa Lucia.
It is very usual when a song became a hit in another country, but only the melody is appreciated and wore totally new text, rhythm and mood. In the end-year scene, in Europe, we hear often the church music by Bach and Haendel. In Japan, number 9 by Beethoven is absolutely the most common. All over Japan, so many chorus groups sing No. 9 Choral. Most of them don’t can’t speak German. But they really enjoy and feel ecstasy singing the Choral. I think it is wonderful. It proves we all have same and common cultural ground. Since the melody is the foundation of the words, language, literature, philosophy and ideology.
