春
東京近郊で、櫻の開花が早いのは、伊豆の河津櫻が有名だが、今年は、その河津櫻の開花が２週間遅れた。　日本の「お花見」は、櫻の下で集い、宴会をして楽しむ行事であり、単に花を観るのとは、大いに異なる。
日本人の、ほぼ全員が心待ちにするので、飲食・観光・旅行産業にとって、毎年の商機・ビッグチャンスである。　近年では、地方自治体も地元活性化の目玉にと、力を入れている。　そこで、河津櫻のお花見は、例年、早くから、予約・満席・売切れで、動かしようのない日程となっている。　それが、今年は開花が２週間遅れた。地元では、数本の櫻を選び、根元を温め、お湯をまいて、開花ゼロというカタストローフを避けたそうである。
ところが、その後、気温は急上昇した。　東京の櫻は、いつもより２週間早く咲いた。　東京のお花見関連産業は、例年の日程を２週間早めねばならなくなった。　結局、夜間照明・膨大な量となるゴミ対策施設、焼きそば・焼き鳥・お好み焼き等の屋台、どれも東京の櫻の開花には間にあわなかった。屋台・露天商の人達は、全国を回っているので、突然、ローテーションを速めることは、難しいらしい。
お花見シーズン全体としては、始まりが２週間おくれ、終わりが２週間早まり、大変密度の高いものとなった訳である。　そこで、今年は、一度に色々な櫻を観賞できるお花見であった。　色々な櫻というのは、実は、櫻には大変な数の品種がある。どうも、櫻は本来、バラの種属であり、接木・交媒が比較的容易らしく、櫻好きの日本人が実に多種・多様な品種を作り、植えている。　東京の桜の名所、上野公園には、地元の観光資料によれば、約５０種類の櫻が植えられているということである。
中国では、唐の時代から今日まで、牡丹を愛してきた。オランダは、チューリップ狂いを経験している。　考えてみると、我々人類は、牛も馬も、犬・猫・鶏、穀物・野菜・果物、身辺、眼に触れ、手に触れるあらゆる自然の仕組みを、人間中心の価値判断に沿わすべく干渉してきた。　人間が地球の主人であるという姿勢の証明だろう。　この姿勢・行動パターンが、化石燃料を使い尽くし、制御不能の原子力利用に手を染め、地球温暖化対策に右往左往している。　地球を使い尽くして、宇宙に旅たつのが先か、それとも静かな春が訪れるのが先か。
Spring
There is a town in Izu peninsula, Kawazu. The cherry blossoms of Kawazu are famous as the first cherry blossoms in Tokyo / Kanto region. This winter was severe, the cherry in Kawazu delayed for 2 weeks.
We Japanese love cherry blossoms, not only to see the beauty of blossoms but to have cozy eating, drinking and singing parties under the blossoms. The cherry blossoms mean big chance for food, restaurant and tourism industries; since the majority of Japanese are eagerly waiting for the arrival of the season. Local townships are also very enthusiastic to attract tourists. Therefore to reserve the tickets, to book restaurants and hotels should be done in good time.
The delayed cherry blossoms in Kawazu made hell of troubles for both the local people and for the tourists. A few selected cherry trees got special treatment; their root systems were warmed up so that to avoid the catastrophe i.e. none blossoms.
But the weather in Tokyo dramatically changed, to a very warm spring. The cherry blossoms started 2 weeks earlier than usual. The cherry blossom industries in Tokyo had to prepare for the big chance 2 weeks before their plans. The night light-up system and the facilities for the huge amount of visitors such as WC and extra dust bins were not ready on the arrival of blossoms. The temporally restaurants with many tents, tables and chairs were not completed in time.
A blossom time with 2 weeks delayed openings and also 2 weeks too early endings made this season rich and condensed. We could enjoy many different blossoms together. Cherry trees are a kind of roses therefore we can rather easily create new sorts of blossoms. In Ueno Park there are 1,000 cherry trees of 50 sorts.
Chinese people have loved peonies for long time, at least since the Tang period, AD 618-907. Netherlands had the period of Tulipomania. When I look around my daily life, there are so many artificial species. Beef and milk cows, horses, dogs, cats, hens, grain, vegetables and fruit, all of them are made by men to satisfy their desire. We have intervened in the nature’s orders as to make them fitting for our own purposes. As if we were the master of this planet.
This attitude, this pattern of behavior has driven us spending the resources of fossil fuels to nearly dry out, getting into the atomic energy system and to chase us fighting against Global Warming.
Shall we depart to another planet leaving the dried out Globe? 　Shall the Silent Spring come before our departure?
