| お経 最近、お葬式に参列する機会がありました。仏式・禅宗の葬儀でした。近頃の日本では、結婚式の場合は、神前・教会・区役所と、いろいろバリエーションに富んできています。 しかし、お葬式は、私の知る限りでは、圧倒的に仏式で執り行われることが多いようです。 お葬式は、当人不在ですので、生存者の判断、都合となります。 世の中・世間体という価値判断・基準に照らすと、それなりの規模の仏式ということになる、ということでしょう。 生来、好奇心が強い私は、冠婚葬祭の様子・進行に興味があり、眼を見張り、耳をそばだてて観察します。 我々日本人の死生観を具体化・様式化した葬儀には、昔からの風習・伝統・価値観が、今日の日本にどのように適応されているか。 それでも残る、古来の風習・心情に教えられるところが多いからです。 仏式の葬儀では、僧侶による読経が主役となります。どんなお経がと、一生懸命聴いていましたが、全く理解できません。 しかし、「トラヤーヤ」という言葉？が数回聞き取れました。記号の反復に眼を付けるのは、暗号解読の基本だということで、この「トラヤーヤ」をキーワードに調べてみて、どうやら、陀羅尼経の一種と判明しました。 このお経は、梵語のまま詠まれて、ただ有難い意味不明の「呪文・おまじない」だそうです。 日本に於ける仏教では、こういう梵語のまま意味不明の呪文が他にもいろいろな形であります。 私は、この意味不明の発音のみをなぞった呪文を不自然だと感じます。梵語で書かれた文章は、当然翻訳可能な筈で、訳したいのは、人間本来の自然な願望でしょう。 そもそも、全ての仏典は梵語が漢語に翻訳されてきたものなのですから。 意味不明、しかも長文の呪文が唱えられる。これは、教会堂でもモスクでも道教廟でも考えられないでしょう。 隠れキリシタンの間では、２５０年間オラショを唱え続け、毎年年末には第九の合唱を楽しむ無数のグループがあり、ビートルズ、マイケル・ジャクソンの来日に熱狂する若者達、魔笛・リゴレット・ローエングリンに酔いしれる高齢者層。 知的活動の基盤である言語から意義を取り去り、ためらいも不安もない、これは、日本文化の知的脇の甘さと言うべきでしょうか、それとも強靭な胃袋、寛容さでしょうか。 Sutra I had an occasion to attend a funeral. The funeral was a Zen Buddhism ceremony. Recently in Japan, wedding ceremonies have quite a lot of variations such as, at a Shinto-shrine, at a church and at a town hall. But most of funerals are Buddhist ceremonies. A funeral is held without the concerned person. So, its form, taste and scale are given by the lefts; the appearance in the community must be prior in consideration. I am curious how those ceremonies are held. I watch the processions carefully. I can learn Japanese traditional concept on death. I can see how the old way of funerals is reformed and adjusted to modern Japanese life; how simplified, what is lost and what are kept. The main part of Japanese funeral ceremonies is priest’s reading Sutra. I could not perceive the Sutra at all. I could only recognize a word “Torayaya” a few times. One of the basics to decrypt encoded texts is to find repetitions of same codes. From “Torayaya”, I traced back that the Sutra was a sort of “dhaaraNii”, a type of Sutra which is written in Sanskrit and only phonetically rewritten in Chinese characters without translations, a magic spell. There are several numbers of magic spells in Japanese Buddhism. I think these spells are unnatural. The original texts in Sanskrit must possibly be translated into Chinese. When we meet some texts sounding meaningless, it is our natural will to try to translate them. Isn’t it? And anyway all the Sutras had been translated from Sanskrit texts into Chinese texts. It is very difficult to imagine long texts without meanings read daily in the churches, mosques or any other temples. Such wouldn’t happen. Those so called crypto-Christians in Kyushu have read oratio, prayers, in Latin for 400 years. Many chorus groups all over Japan sing Beethoven Nr 9 in the New Years Eve. The Beatles and Michael Jackson are madly welcomed. Among elderly Japanese, there are many opera enthusiasts who really enjoy “Die Zauberfloete”, “Rigoletto” and “Lohengrin”. The language is the fundament of all the intellectual activities. It seems Japanese do not care very much to take away meanings from languages and do not worry about it. Is Japanese culture intellectually loose and lacking precision? Or, has Japanese culture extremely strong stomach? |
