小春日和
一年で、一番日の短い日、「冬至」まで後一と月という、１１月２２日に名古屋に往きました。　東京から名古屋まで、一日中素晴らしい好天気でした。　もっとも、冬至が近くなると、天気が悪い日が増えねばならない、という理屈は全くないわけですが、日が弱くなり、曇りの日が暗くなって、急に寒くなるのは、理屈通りです。　　今度のような、好天気を「小春日和」といいますね。　お正月・三が日には、小春日和が多いような気もします。
クリスマス・お正月は、寒い冬で、雪が降って、というのは、北半球の温帯より北に住んでいる我々だけの季節感で、台湾・フィリピン・シンガポール・インドネシア・ハワイの人々には、そんな季節感はないことでしょうね。　　オーストラリア・ブラジル・アルゼンチンといった、南半球では、そもそも、１２月は真夏です。
「小春日和」を、米語では、”Indian summer”と言うらしいです。ローラ・インガルス・ワイルダーの「大草原の小さな家」に、インディアン・サンマーの素晴らしい一日が描かれていました。　しかし、”Indian summer”、チョット違和感がありますね。
季節・天候・生活を結ぶ、「季節感」は、我々の文化を支える大切な柱の１本です。　季節・季節感をあらわす言葉の連想が、ほぼ同じであろうということを前提に、我々は、話し合います。　そして、仲間内の心地よさに溺れ、地球上には、実に多くの、異なった季節感を持った人々が居るということを、ともすると、忘れがちです。
貴方は、「国家」・「歴史」・「言語」という言葉から、どういう事柄を連想しますか。
台湾・フィリピン・シンガポール・インドネシア・ハワイ・オーストラリア・ブラジル・アルゼンチンの人々は、どういう事柄を連想するのでしょうか。

Indian summer
I had an occasion to go to Nagoya on the 22nd of November. It was just a month before the winter solstice, the shortest day of the year. Through the journey to Nagoya, it was a very fine day. There is no rational reason that around the winter solstice could be bad weather. But the sun shine gets weaker, the day gets darker and colder, you get more sensible to the bad weather. This is reasonable. The fine weather in autumn as I had is called “Indian summer” in American English. Somehow the New Years Days are often fine.
We associate Xmas and New Year with snowy cold winter days. But it is just we who live in the northern hemisphere, north of the tropic of Cancer. The people who live in the countries such as, Taiwan, the Philippines, Singapore, Indonesia, Hawaii, they would not associate Xmas and New Year with snowy cold winter days. For Australians, Brazilians, Argentines, December is the middle of summer.
In “Little House on the Prairie” by Laura Ingalls Wilder, Indian summer is described very nicely. But I have a feeling that something is wrong in the Indian summer.
Xmas, its season, its weather and its life, we take it given that all of us associate them with a same atmosphere. You may call this assumption as our culture. But there are many people who don’t associate as we do.
