Watermelon
The watermelon represents the summer fruit in Japan.
When you paint fruit, you draw bananas, strawberries or apples.
When it concerns to paint, to buy, or to eat a watermelon, you have to make up your mind and determine to do it. The watermelon has a character, a dignity, especially represents the summer. A watermelon is a big fruit and must be eaten chilled. Bananas, strawberries or apples, we eat them scarcely considering if they were chilled or not. There is no other fruit, no other food which must be chilled to be served except ice-cream and sorbet. The chilled beer is considered distasteful in England. I have never heard any argument over a mug of beer if it were chilled or not in Germany.
In old days it was a simple process to chill a watermelon. Just to hang it in a well or to let float in the river or sea. By the way, a watermelon floats nicely: its specific gravity is approximately 0.7 according to my quick calculation. Today it is even simpler to chill a watermelon, just by keeping it in your refrigerator. But, a Japanese middle size watermelon has a diameter of 25cm, weighs 5,5kg. It is clumsy and occupies a large space in a refrigerator. There is an extra small sized watermelon with a diameter of 12cm in Japan. Very Japanese isn’t it? But its taste is not so fantastic and its outer layer is too thin. With this outer layer, after having taken away the hard skin, I would make a sort of pickles which taste better than cucumber pickles.
To place a watermelon in my refrigerator nicely, I cut the top, bottom and also four sides of watermelon, to a cubic form of 20cm by 20cm by 20cm. With this cubic cut watermelon, you can’t enjoy eating the old classic half moon slices. But, in the white, smooth and shiny dining room of a high-rise modern flat without garden, you have lost already the free cozy atmosphere, sitting easily and spitting away seeds of the watermelon anywhere you want.
Perhaps it is high time to reconsider to live in a high-rise flat.
