ストックホルムの桜
北欧の冬は、厳しい。 しかし、たしかにマイナス２５度のことはあっても、我われ、暖国で連想しがちな、もの凄い寒さが厳しいのではない。　屋内は、快適にあたたかい。 屋外も、着るものさえ対応していれば、歩いたりして、活動していると、汗をかくほどである。
北欧の冬の厳しさは、長さと暗さである。
春分・お彼岸には、世界中が、昼夜半々となる。 東京では、日比谷公園の桜は満開となる。 お堀端の菜の花も満開となる。  ストックホルムの桜は、それから、４０日・５０日遅れで、満開となる。  ストックホルムの中心に。「キングスガーデン」という、大きな都市型公園があって、そこの、冬にはスケートリンクになる池を囲んで、いつのまにか、立派な桜の若木の並木ができていた。
その桜が、丁度今年から、本格的に花をつけた。 桜の種類は、日本で流行っている、「染井吉野」ではないように見えた。ややピンクがかった花の色とか、咲き方は、いわゆる八重桜に似ているが、花弁の先のぎざぎざが際立っている。いかにも造園・園芸用に開発された樹種なのだろう。揃って一斉に咲き、わずかな風に花吹雪となる風景に、ストックホルム市民は、戸惑っているようにもみえた。
今まで、桜がなかった訳ではない。だいたい桜は、実のなる果樹というのが通念で、「チェリー」といえば果物のこと、桜の木を特に指したい場合には、桜ん坊の成る木、「チェリーツリー」という使い分けを、英語でも、スエーデン語でもする。私の家の前には、樹齢七・八十年の巨木がある。英語で「Bird Cherry」という可愛らしい名前の、スエーデン語で「ヘッグ」という小さな酸っぱい実の成る木も良く庭木にされている。
林檎でも、桜でも、果樹の花は長持ちして、なかなか散らない。昆虫の飛来をより長い間期待しているのだろう。結実を待つ樹木の花期が長く、結実しない樹種の花は、すばらしいけれども、華やかな時期はごく短い。
コスメチック産業界は、こういうことも考えたほうが。

Cherry Blossoms in Stockholm
The winterin Scandinavia is harsh. It could be below 25 C. But, the harshness is not its low temperature as we, mild climate dwellers, would associate with. It is very warm and comfortable inside the house. Outside, be properly dressed, then you could be even sweaty when you are walking. The harshness of Scandinavian winter is its length and darkness.
At the vernal equinox day, the day time and the night time are same all over the world. In Tokyo, the cherry blossoms in the Hibiya Park and the rape blossoms in the Emperors Park are full. The cherry blossoms in Stockholm become full after 40/50 days of the Tokyo’s.
There is a large fine park in the center of Stockholm named “The Kings Garden”. I found there was a newly planted cherry alley around the pond which is used to be an ice skate rink in the winter season. It turned out that this year was the first season of the cherry blossoms. The cherry trees were not “Somei Yoshino”, which are popular and common in Japan. The blossoms were fantastic and rather pinkish and were easily falling as a snow storm by a slight breeze. This sort can be a new variety specially made for the alley. The citizen of Stockholm was astonished and overwhelmed by the volume and the manner of blossoms.
The cherry trees have been in Stockholm, not unusual trees. The cherry trees have been considered fruit trees. Both in English and Swedish, cherry means fruit. If you will mean the tree then you should say the cherry tree. In front of my house there is a huge cherry tree 70/80 years old. There is also a sort named “Bird Cherry”, “Hagberry”, which is a common tree in gardens or parks in Stockholm.
I would say that the apple trees or the cherry trees, the blossoms of fruit trees keep long expecting better and longer contacts with the insects. The blossoms prepared only its outlooks for the preference of mankind could be beautiful but have a short life.
Perhaps the cosmetic industry should think about it.
