断面図
先日乗った飛行機の座席番号は、４１Ｈでした。　飛行機の座席は、一等とか、ビジネスといった上級席が前にあります。　座席番号は、前からずっと連続しているわけではなく、各クラスごとに区切られているようで、２０番ぐらいから、私のいつも座るエコノミークラスが始まります。　私は、切符の価格帯のなかで、出来るだけ前の方の通路側を希望します。　二倍以上の高い切符を買っている人と、座ってみればカーテン一枚のすぐ次というのは、マアけち臭い考えですが、得をしたような気がします。　一箇所しかない入り口から、一人づつ、奥へ奥へと詰め込まれるのは、一升瓶にお米を注ぎ込むようですね。　最後尾のあたりに座ると、なんとなく、押しつぶされるような感じがします。　どうせ、入国管理・手荷物受取り・通関と、待ち時間・行列を何回も繰り返し、飛行機から早く出ることは、意味がない筈なのに。　案外、心の底には、落ちるのが怖い、少しでも早く飛行機から離れたいという気持ちがあるのかも知れません。
４１Ｈは、私の普段の２０番台の席からは、ずうっと後ろで、内心不満でした。　しかし、そこは、広々として、前の席のない、離着陸時に搭乗員がこちら向きに座る、非常口へのスペースに面して、その上、２席しか並んでいない、それこそ支払った価格帯の中で最高の席でした。
隣に座ったのは、なんと４０歳前後の美女でした。フィンランド大使館に勤め、クリスマス休暇で帰国するところということでした。　フィンランドは、ロシア・スエーデン・ノルウェイという、インドヨーロッパ語系の国々に囲まれていますが、フィンランドの人々は、どちらかと言えば、シベリア・朝鮮半島・日本で話される語系の一つ、フィンランド語を話します。　西欧語に関して彼らは、我々と同様な困難を抱えているわけです。　隣に座った彼女の英語は、完璧でした。　フィンランドは、実は歴史のしがらみから、バイリンガルで、スエーデン語も公用語の国です。ヘルシンキの街頭には、道路名が二ヶ国語で併記されています。　私たちは、スエーデン語を避けて、英語で話しました。　成田―ヘルシンキは、９時間半ほどですが、アット言う間に過ぎてしまいました。
どの航空会社でも、成田発の機内食の一隅には、どう言う訳か、ほんの一口分お蕎麦がついています。私のところに、彼女のところにも、機内食が配られて、私は食事に集中していました。お蕎麦を食べ始めて、アッと気が付きました。彼女は、窓側・私の右側に座って、お箸を使うのが、鏡対称、私の右手のすぐ横で、彼女の手とお箸が動いています。　それまで、ワインを飲み、ナイフ・フォークを使っていた時には全く現れなかったこと、彼女は左利きだったのです。
　赤いリンゴを、縦に真っ二つに切れば、外観とは深く関わってはいるものの、およそ別次元の様子が現れます。　　もし、水平に胴切りすれば、これまた、違った面を示します。　国家・企業・政治家・個人、世の中は、見えるところで解ったつもりでも、ところが見えない部分の方がたっぷりあるものです。　新しい視点で、新鮮な断面を切り出す努力が大切ですね。

A cross section view
Last time my seat number was 41H in the plane to Helsinki. The aeroplane seat map shows the upper class begins from the head, the tail end for the group organized travelers. My class, the economy class, usually begins from seat number 20. I request an aisle seat, as fore as possible, in the zone where my ticket status, price rank of the ticket, allows. I feel very satisfied when I find my seat just after the business class that would cost double. I know it is rather mean. But still. 　
Being passed one by one through a narrow door to a far back seat is rather depressing procedure for me. I want to come out as soon as possible when the plane has landed. But there are queue making and waiting, such as the passport control, receiving hand luggage and the custom control after leaving the plane actually. Therefore it is of no use to come out in a hurry. Perhaps in the depth of my heart I have the fear to crash that drives me for quick exit.
The seat number 41H was in the midst of the economy class, not directly after the business class that I hoped.  I was disappointed. But it was very roomy, no seat in front of mine, an extra seat facing to me where an attendant shall sit when the plane takes off and lands. The seat may be the best one in the price zone.
It turned out my neighbor was a beautiful Finnish lady of some 40 years old. Finnish is a language very isolated from Indo-European just as Japanese is. But her English was perfect. Actually Finland is bilingual country since there was a long period under Swedish occupation. At street corners in Helsinki, both Finnish and Swedish street name is presented. We didn’t try Swedish but English. Narita-Helsinki, 9 and half hours went very fast.
In any plane departing from Narita, the in-flight meal menu includes always a mini portion of Japanese noodle, OSOBA. When I was concentrating in my meal it happened. She was sitting at my right side. Her hand and arm with chopsticks and OSOBA were moving symmetrically to my movement as if an image in a mirror. She was left-handed. We had conversations, she used knife and fork, had a glass of wine, I never thought her left-handed.
If you cut vertically through an apple, a completely different picture comes out even there is some causality between the external figure and section view. If you cut through horizontally at its waist, another view comes out.
Nations, social systems, companies, politicians, persons, we assume we know them but many qualities are hidden, invisible. We should always try to find a new cross section for a new view, a new understanding.
