ナポリで、お正月
ポルティチは、ナポリ のすぐ東南の隣町です。ヴェスビオス山からナポリ湾に向かう、なだらかな溶岩の斜面に建てられています。昔は、ナポリの王室や貴族の館が建ち並んだ別荘地でした。（ナポリは、１８６０のイタリア統一まで（日本の明治維新の頃）、スペイン・フランス等、多くの国々の系統王家に入れ替わり立ち代り統治された、王国・公国の首都だったのです。）
今でも、緑の庭園・公園が広い街です。「カメオ」で有名な、トーレデルグレコ、「ポンペイ・エルコラノ」の遺跡、「帰れソレントへ」のソレント、近年人気の「アマルフィ」等に向かうには、ここを通り過ぎることになります。
この町で年末・年始を過ごしました。 イタリアの行事・風習については、マア詳しいと自信があったのですが、随分知らないこと、珍しいことが沢山ありました。 「うなぎ」がクリスマス・お正月料理の定番だったとは。　好みも色々で、細い・中型・太い鰻、真剣に選んでいました。その料理は、１０ｃｍ前後にぶつ切りにして、かなり焦げ目をつけた塩味。冷えたものは、サラダに混ぜて、ビネガードレッシング風味。皮の歯ごたえ、ゼラチン感に美味しさがありました。　フト、我々の、「蒲焼」も、皮の食感が重要で、さもなければ、「あなご」と区別し難くなるな、と思いました。
大晦日の夜には、老若男女、みんな「真っ赤な下着」をつける、それも、お友達とか、兄弟・両親からのプレゼントを着ることになっている。 これにも、仰天しました。 新年の朝には、お互いに見せ合ったりしたくは、ならないのでしょうか。
毎晩のように、トランプをしていましたが、これも、私たちのトランプとは違っていました。　１０枚一組、全部で４０枚。見覚えのある、「ダイヤ・ハート・クラブ・スペード」の印しもないし。 でも、私たちの「クラブ」がそもそも英語でも意味する、「棍棒」のこと。　通常「シャベル」の意味と思っていた、「スペード」はイタリア語では、剣のこと。　そういう言葉の基本に帰るような発見もありました。 ちなみに、四つの印しは、「金貨・盃・棍棒・剣」です。「ハート」は、ありません。
夜更けのテーブルでは、日本のお正月のように、蜜柑が匂います。流石に南ヨーロッパで、街路樹・庭木にも柑橘類が非常に目に付きます。今年は暖冬で、東京の桜は、例年より１０日も早く咲きました。ナポリでは、もう「ミモザ」が咲き誇っていることでしょう。

New Year's Days in Naples
Portici is on the south east of Naples on the lava slope of Mt. Vesuvius. For hundreds years the town had been the summer residence area for the kings' and for the noble families'. There are large gardens and parks today. You shall pass through Portici when you visit Torre del Greco of "Cameo", Ercolano, Pompei, Sorrento and Amalfi.
This year, I spent my New Year holidays in Portici. I have had a slight self-confidence on Italian custom, but there were so many old and traditional Neapolitan ways I have never met. For quite number of Neapolitans the eel dish was inevitable on the table of New Year. At the market, people were very choosy to select the best size eel, for some of them the thin one and for others the fat one. The eel was cut to 10 cm's length to be pan-fried well until rather burnt and tasted with salt and pepper. When the dish got cold, then those pan-fried eel was mixed in the salad. I found the secret of the taste in the burnt elastic and gelatinous skin of eel; otherwise it might be hard to distinguish eel from conger.
At the New Years Eve, Neapolitans would put bright red under wears. The wears should be the New Years presents from parents, friends and so on. The red color will bring you the fortune just as a Chinese saying. I secretly imagined people showing their red under wears each other in the morning of the New Year's Day.
People played card games until midnight. The cards were not same as we used to play. A pack was 40 cards; ten cards made one suit with a same mark and there were four marks. The marks were not "Diamonds, Hearts etc." those which we know, but "Gold coins, Cups, Clubs and Swords". Here, Club means a weapon to hit. In Italian sword is "Spade". It was interesting. And another interesting thing there were no "Hearts".
At the table, it smelled the mandarin fragrance just as at the table of Japanese New Year. There were full of the citrus plants with fruits in the gardens and on the streets. It was warm in Naples. In Tokyo we are having cherry blossoms already in March. In Naples now it must be full of mimosa blossoms.
