バスク語
昨年末、ビルバオに行く機会がありました。マドリッドからほんの３０分のビルバオ空港 で、一瞬、戸惑いました。ヘルシンキか、イスタンブールに着いた時の感覚でした。 　　文字 はアルファベットなのですが、全く理解はおろか類推不可能なのです。
１００万人に近い人々の間で日常話されているバスク語は、氷河時代の住民にまでさかの ぼらないと説明の付かないほど、世界中の言語と無関係な、日本語よりさらに孤独な言語 だそうです。　そういう独特な文化の人口グループが、独立した国を持たずに、消え去りも せずに、一地域としてあるというのは本当に驚きでした。ここの人々は、何百年もの間、 全くつながりの無い二国語のバイリンガル、だったわけです。　すぐ東には、スペイン語（カ タルーニャ語）を話して、人口７万人のアンドラが独立国家です。
ピカソの「ゲルニカ」で有名なゲルニカの町は、このビルバオの近郊２０ｋｍです。バス ク文化の中心でした。新兵器の実験場にされたことが何となく腑に落ちます。
国、国境と いうものは、不思議で不可解なものです。国家・政府と、住民の人生・日常生活との断点、 不連続性が露呈しています。残念なことに、今日、「国家・国益」という言葉から連想され るのは、経済圏拡張・資源確保を目的とした、安易に武力・暴力を行使し、怪しげな宗教・ 道徳を振り回す権力です。　あるいは、これが「国家」の歴史的に正しい、正確な定義なの かもしれません。
ビルバオ日帰りに利用した、マドリッド空港ターミナル４では、爆破テロで２人死亡する 事件が起りました。私が通り過ぎた二日後でした。
世界には数多くの言語があり使われています。スペイン語とポルトガル語は、合わせると ６億人近くの人々が使っています。中国語は１３億人と別格として、ヒンディ（印度）、ア ラビア語、英語を母国語としているのは、それぞれ４億人前後だそうです。　それよりより 多くの人々が使っていることになりますね。こうなった原因・事情には、大航海時代と称 される独善的な文明の押し売り・植民地化・虐殺があった。それはそれとして、スペイン 語ができれば、メキシコからアルゼンチンまで、さらにカリブ海の諸国と、何処へ行って も言葉に不自由しないとは、なんと素晴らしいことでしょう。観光だけではなく、情報・ 文学・音楽、もっと実用的に、就職探しだって広い世界があります。
日本語は、バスク語よりもっと難しいでしょう。　漢字とかな文字。　表意文字と表音文字が 混交なので、憶えなければならない事が気の遠くなるほどあります。　読み方の無数にある 漢字。　新語・造語にゆるやか・自由といえば聞こえがいいけれども、言葉を大切にしない、 無節操さにはあきれます。　　考えることと、言葉を使いこなすこととは、ほとんど同じでし ょうに。　　携帯メールとテレビのお笑いでは、思考の道具はますますお粗末に成ります。
外国語で苦労している人たちは世界には山ほどいます。　フィンランド、ハンガリー、トル コ、中近東アラビア語を話す人たち。　ほとんど全てのアジアの人々。　今日の世界の現状で は、インド・ヨーロッパ語属以外の言葉を話す人々は例外なくハンディを背負っています。 　どんな言葉でも、「その国では子供でもペラペラ」と良く言われます。
我々は、お陰で、こ んなに難しい日本語を自動的に完璧に近くできる。　こんな得なこともある。　と前向きに考 えたほうが良いでしょう。
そこでひとつ頑張って、スペイン語でも？？？
"Euskara Basque"
I had an occasion to make a short trip to Basque last December. It took only a half an hour from Madrid to Bilbao. 　At the airport I felt lost. The sense I felt was similar to the one when I visited Helsinki or Istanbul. The letters were in alphabet but it was a very strange language.
The Basque language is daily spoken by one million people and is an isolated language without any similar language in the world. 　It is said that this language could be left by the prehistoric dwellers of the glacial period. For me, speaking Japanese, it was very interesting that there were people speaking such an independent language kept for tens thousands years.
Geographically the area has never been isolated from the surroundings and has been quite long divided into two pieces, one to France and another to Spain. Andorra is an independent nation speaking Spanish (Catalan), population 70,000.
Guernica was an important cultural center of Basque, a town 20 km east of Bilbao. The town is famous through the painting "Guernica" by Picasso. I feel I got the explanation why Guernica was the experiment field of the new weapon, air raid bombing.
Nation and border are strange and incomprehensive. There is no rational, no fair reason. The national border symbolizes the discontinuity between the nation and the people. 　We live in an unlucky era. The word "Nation" has so much negative meaning. Today those words such as "Nation" and "National interest", I associate with the violent power and force, with the army and the police, and with the egocentric moral and weird religions.
Two days after my visit to Bilbao, the terrorist bomb explosions killed 2 persons at the terminal 4 of Madrid airport, where was my terminal building.
There are many languages in our world. Chinese are spoken by 1,300millions. Hindi, Arabic and English are spoken by 400millions each.　 600millions of people use Spanish and Portuguese. The reason why so many people speak Spanish or Portuguese is not so glorious or honorable. The period when Spanish or Portuguese colonized the continents of Middle and South America often by the genocide called "The Age of Discovery".　 Even so, if you could speak Spanish or Portuguese you would have no difficulty to travel through these continents. 　How wonderful it would be. Not only as the matter of the tourism but also the information exchanges, the literatures, the music, and practical matters such as seeking jobs.
A wide world opens for you.
Japanese might be much more difficult than Basque. You have to learn and memorize so many Chinese characters and Kana alphabets. The pronunciations of Chinese characters in Japanese way are just arbitrary. One character used to have three or more different sounds. Japanese society allows introducing new words without restrictions. It might sound free and open attitude but it is loose and unprincipled.
Many people in the world have great difficulty learning foreign language. There are Finnish, Hungarian, people in the Middle and Near East, and most of the people in Asia. We have to admit that those who have not Indo-European languages as their mother tongue are handicapped in our world today. 　We say children can speak their native language fluently. We can speak such difficult Japanese. We need not go through the hard learning of Japanese. Look at our situation positively.
